Quick status check? How’s everyone doing? My start-of-semester rush is about done, and I’m ready to dive back in… but I’ve lost track of what needs to be done. :) Are we ready to start adding content, or is there more backend work that needs to be finished first?

Got really crazy for me for a while, finally starting to settle into something resembling a pattern. I did leave my part-time position at Eastman (just last week, actually), so I’m not directly in the edu arena anymore. However, the agency I work for now does do some work for higher ed, and I like you guys too much to not be involved, anyway :)

I need to make a template for single-showcase that includes a slideshow. I did one for plugins, although I did not include screenshots yet. I think we also need to do some extending of profiles. Probably also have to do a little review and probable fixes to accommodate the responsive stuff in the new BP default :)

That’s the one I’ve been using, but it hasn’t been doing anything for the last couple of weeks. I’d initially cut down on spam registrations quite a bit by changing ‘BP_REGISTER_SLUG’ in the config file, but now the spammers are getting through again.

TL;DR: None of the old methods seem to be working, and I don’t know of anything newer.

I made a child theme for the BP default for us, since Twenty Eleven was chomping on the Ajax. Stephanie, I made a small change to your WP-Edu CPT plugin to remove the Subscriptions column from the Showcase CPT. I can make these changes myself if you’d like, but in addition to suggesting that the slug for plugin details just be plugins, I’d also like to add has_archive to both CPTs.

I went ahead and made those changes (as mentioned below) and am now thinking that we should also auto-add forum topics so we can link back to it from the plugin details page and perhaps also bring in recent discussion on it. Same should probably go for showcases and schools – thoughts? We are not currently using the bbPress as plugin version, which we should move to, so perhaps this should wait a little.

bbPress 2.0 isn’t yet integrated into BP groups (though I think it does have support for the BP activity stream). If you plan to use group forums, don’t use bbPress 2.0 yet (and vice versa) because it’ll mean that you’ll have two different sets of forum data.

For when you have time to catch your breath… :)

I just uploaded the finished WP-Edu CPT plugins, but the old one needs to be de/reactivated to get all the hooks going. There’s also a new one (in the same folder) called WP-Edu Extensions for I Make Plugins, which should be activated after I Make Plugins itself. That’s the one that adds tags for the screenshots.

I did the taxonomy archive with the redirect, too, and dumped it into the twentyeleven-bp folder.

It’s all magically working! You add a plugin term to a Showcase post (or just on the add tag screen), view it, and it whisks you to the matching Plugin Details post, which is pre-filled with the stuff from Extend but can be edited.

I put a readme.txt file in the plugin folder with some details on how it all works, in case others wander in to the project and wonder what the frak is going on.

Hope the move is going well!

So I wanted to start adding some content, but wasn’t sure how we were going to structure it. Do we want to add a wiki like functionality that others could edit? That would seem best.

I can install this plugin on the site. We use it at UNC-CH and it seems to work well. http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wordpress-wiki

Then we could have a few wiki’s with their own sub-pages.

    • Why WordPress (I would take some of the recent thread on wp-edu listserv and add it in there to give us a structure
    • Getting Started (this would include some plugins all sites should have, server setup, etc.)

Kind of like our documentation resource for those looking to get started. Then the forums are for those with problems. What do y’all think?

Let me get a space set up in my current BuddyPress project for you to look over.

BTW, I’m not getting e-mail notifications when there are replies, so I might be a little delaye in getting back to your questions.

Yeah, email notifications appear not to be working on P2 with this particular plugin. Will try to figure out another way to get them working.

wp-edu.org is now on BuddyPress trunk and using a Twenty Eleven child theme. More theme mods to come.

I’m finding that some things aren’t working at all and I don’t really know why (Ajax, group functions). I’ll try my hand at investigating, but I’m not strong with BuddyPress. Anybody good at figuring that kind of stuff out?

Not in the least, but the last time I checked the BP site, it didn’t work well with Twenty Eleven yet.

Bah that stinks! Maybe I’ll have to go at it from another angle, make the BP theme look like Twenty Eleven instead. Will see once I get settled and have computer/Internet again.

    Things the showcase should do:

    • Featured image, and perhaps a slider
    • Have a metabox with the URL, contact person (hopefully can find an easy way to associate with existing site member), and…?
    • Custom taxonomies for the school and plugins used (both non-hierarchical?), maybe also flavor of WordPress? Areas used?
    • Appear in RSS feed of all posts

I think we can work some magic to make the various taxonomies link to something relevant inside the site, e.g. a member’s profile, a school’s profile, or a discussion board dedicated to that particular plugin/usage.

    • Stephanie Leary 4:57 pm on July 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Exactly. We could do a separate taxonomy for flavor: WP, MU, BP, BB… maybe as a hierarchical one for the nice checkbox interface, with WP as the default. For the rest of the plugins, I think non-hierarchical ones make sense. Same for schools, unless we want to do subcategories for schools’ departments, but the list would quickly get insanely long.

If the site member would not be the actual author of the post, we can borrow some code from my Content Audit plugin for a secondary user dropdown meta box, which could then link to anything on the front end.

So it might look something like this:

      category: flavor
      tag: essential plugins used
      tag: school
      meta: site URL
      meta: contact person

… and some user meta for the person’s details.

OK, here’s a less shaky prototype: wp-edu-cpts.zip. It relies on Mark Jaquith’s I Make Plugins plugin, so you’ll need to install that as well to see how this works.

This creates two post types: the showcase and a plugin details post. The showcase has three taxonomies: school, WP flavor, and plugins used. When a new term is added to the plugins taxonomy, a mirror plugin details post is created using the same slug. That post is pre-filled with the shortcodes from I Make Plugins, which fetch and display parts of the plugin’s readme file. (I think the description and the FAQ sections would be plenty; we don’t need to display the full changelog and all that.) That gives us a post with comments where we can discuss the plugin.

To redirect the taxonomy archives to the post, we can either mess with the rewrite API (ugh) or just create a taxonomy archive file that finds the slug and redirects the user to the matching plugin details post.

I Make Plugins doesn’t handle screenshots, so that’s something we’d need to add if we want to pull those in.

Let me know if all that makes sense!

Wireframes to go with the prototype: showcase post, plugin detail post.

Nice! I like the usage of the I Make Plugins plugin. Why reinvent the wheel, right? I agree that the description and FAQ are enough, and of course a link to the repository itself. I’d be interested in extending it to include screenshots – I’m totally a screenshot junky.

You know, I don’t know if somebody like Nacin would tell me that this will fall on my head or shoot me in the face, but for the appropriate taxonomy archive file we could have some checks right at the top and just do a redirect to the plugin post itself if it exists. I personally would be just fine with the URL changing instead of stressing rewrite rules, but I’m not really thinking about things like performance at the moment. I wonder if the plugins should also be a CPT, since they are probably not part of the chronological piece. I’m imagining articles, recommendations, links, etc. as the blog part itself.

I’m going to swap wp-edu.org over to BP 1.3 beta and run the WP upgrade before installing your plugin. Don’t want to be developing backward :D Also, awesome wireframes. I’ll look into JS sliders that work with built-in galleries.

Oh, and I am currently working on an in-house departmental alumni network that utilizes user meta, so I’m happy to build it all in if we don’t end up using BP for some reason. BP is probably the best way to go, though. Also, we can have user submissions using Gravity Forms CPT integration – have a developer’s license I’m happy to use here.

Great! I was going to suggest Gravity. I have a form with all the mods for CPTs and taxonomies… around here… somewhere. Yeah. ;)

The fragile part of all this is that I Make Plugins, and therefore the whole taxonomy/CPT mirror setup, requires that the page slug matches the one on Extend. As a dev, when you rename a plugin, you can’t change its original slug, so there’s no guarantee that the one auto-generated from the name will be correct. We might have to check them periodically, or have the user submissions go in as Pending Approval so we can take a look and change both the taxonomy slug and the page slug if need be.

Either that, or we come up with a form that lets people enter both the plugin name and its slug, and we work some magic on the back end to insert the taxonomy with that slug instead of the auto-generated one.

Let’s take the easy way out with the taxonomy archives unless/until performance becomes an issue.

“I wonder if the plugins should also be a CPT” — They are!

On the screenshots and sliders — for the plugin detail pages, I’d rather fetch the URLs on the fly from Extend, because if we put them into the media library, we’re going to have to fire up a cron job or something to check for updates. So if you find a good slider that just works with URLs, that’ll be better for the plugins, and we can tweak the regular post templates to spit out a loop of attached images.

If you’re looking at sliders, I’ll work on grabbing the URLs for the screenshots. I’ve already been digging through the I Make Plugins code. :)

I’ve heard good things about this GF add-on: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gravity-forms-custom-post-types/

Pending Approval sounds like a good idea. I think it’d help avoid mistakes and satisfies the control freak in me, but of course that’s totally just a personal preference.

I activated the plugin and went, oh duh, there are the plugins! Hehe. That’s what I get for just scanning through your code :D

There are a bunch of sliders out there, although I’ve had the best luck taking an existing one and making my own plugin rather than trying to sift through the thousands that are out there with myriad options. I’ve heard good things about Nivo Slider and it uncannily matches your wireframe: http://nivo.dev7studios.com/

I know that they sell a plugin, but I think we’d have a better time with our various integrations rolling our own solution using it. I’m pretty sure just about any slider can take image URLs, although we’d have to figure out a way to deal with the differing sizes of screenshots (unless we just went with regular old image links that lightbox or something, since there aren’t usually THAT many screenshots). I think for attached images, though, that’s easy enough, especially with another registered image size. Thoughts for the size? Horizontal or vertical? I wonder if vertical would suit screenshots better, but that of course takes up more space. Hmm…

That’s the GF add-on I used. Works great.

I’m not sure what to do about the thumbnail sizes. I will ponder….

… OK, I really like Nivo, and it looks like it’s written by the lead UI guy for WordPress. :) I’ll kick in for the plugin if you want to use it — looks like the license allows it to be used on more than one site, and I might just use that instead of the homebrew thing I was cooking up for my current redesign. :)

It says it’ll automatically size and crop images. Perhaps we can give that a shot, and if it doesn’t work out, we can use this on the showcase pages, but switch to a thumbnail gallery / lightbox scheme for the plugin screenshots.

I’ll have to look into how exactly the plugin works – if it works with post attachments, then we’ll find a way to get it! Or, we can just get it if we can reuse it.

I have the new shortcode for screenshots working (huzzah!), but in the process I discovered a giant bug in the CPT plugin: it’s overwriting the post content with the I Make Plugins template every time the page loads. *facepalm* I’ll send new stuff as soon as I debug that little mess.

At the moment, I’m grabbing the screenshots in exactly the same format they use on Extend: each is an unordered list item containing and img tag followed by a paragraph for the caption. I can manipulate that output, though, once I work through the bugs.

(This leads to some hilariously large images in my test site!)

@kylejones and @jeffvand – Would you hate me if I suggested we move to Twenty Eleven / a child theme? I know work was put into SimplePress and we can certainly stick to it, but depending on how much upcoming bbPress and BuddyPress support Twenty Eleven, it might make dev easier. Just food for thought.

Confession: I was pushing using a plugin for CPTs simply because I didn’t want to mess with all the nastiness that goes along with the metaboxes, but if you would prefer to code them yourself, @hhou, then by all means feel free. I’ll help out as much as I can with that without being too much of a hinderance.

Or if you want to rely on More Fields for the metaboxes and code everything else yourself that would be fine too.

    Your call.
