Quick status check? How’s everyone doing? My start-of-semester rush is about done, and I’m ready to dive back in… but I’ve lost track of what needs to be done. Are we ready to start adding content, or is there more backend work that needs to be finished first?

So we are starting to get a ton of spam user accounts created on the site. Anyone have a good spam user registration protection plugin we can use or something? I have temporarily disabled new user registrations till we can figure this out.
Theme is starting to come together! Woohoo!
I made a child theme for the BP default for us, since Twenty Eleven was chomping on the Ajax. Stephanie, I made a small change to your WP-Edu CPT plugin to remove the Subscriptions column from the Showcase CPT. I can make these changes myself if you’d like, but in addition to suggesting that the slug for plugin details just be plugins, I’d also like to add has_archive to both CPTs.
I’m moving from Rochester, NY to Wichita, KS starting today, so I anticipate there being a good bit of down time for me as we make the 20+ hour drive and get moved in and set up. I am also beginning a new full time job the week after this so I’ll be adjusting to a different schedule. So, please bear with me and feel free to prod me if I appear to be inactive!
So I wanted to start adding some content, but wasn’t sure how we were going to structure it. Do we want to add a wiki like functionality that others could edit? That would seem best.
I can install this plugin on the site. We use it at UNC-CH and it seems to work well. http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wordpress-wiki
Then we could have a few wiki’s with their own sub-pages.
- Why WordPress (I would take some of the recent thread on wp-edu listserv and add it in there to give us a structure
- Getting Started (this would include some plugins all sites should have, server setup, etc.)
Kind of like our documentation resource for those looking to get started. Then the forums are for those with problems. What do y’all think?
wp-edu.org is now on BuddyPress trunk and using a Twenty Eleven child theme. More theme mods to come.
Things the showcase should do:
- Featured image, and perhaps a slider
- Have a metabox with the URL, contact person (hopefully can find an easy way to associate with existing site member), and…?
- Custom taxonomies for the school and plugins used (both non-hierarchical?), maybe also flavor of WordPress? Areas used?
- Appear in RSS feed of all posts
I think we can work some magic to make the various taxonomies link to something relevant inside the site, e.g. a member’s profile, a school’s profile, or a discussion board dedicated to that particular plugin/usage.
@kylejones and @jeffvand – Would you hate me if I suggested we move to Twenty Eleven / a child theme? I know work was put into SimplePress and we can certainly stick to it, but depending on how much upcoming bbPress and BuddyPress support Twenty Eleven, it might make dev easier. Just food for thought.
Confession: I was pushing using a plugin for CPTs simply because I didn’t want to mess with all the nastiness that goes along with the metaboxes, but if you would prefer to code them yourself, @hhou, then by all means feel free. I’ll help out as much as I can with that without being too much of a hinderance.
Or if you want to rely on More Fields for the metaboxes and code everything else yourself that would be fine too.
